Supreme Court Nominations Research Guide

On March 16, 2016, President Obama nominated Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Merrick Garland to fill the seat previously held by Justice Scalia.

The Senate Republicans refused to hold a confirmation hearing and a confirmation vote for Judge Merrick.  His nomination expired on January 3, 2017 at the close of the 114th Congress.
