Interlibrary Loan Instructions for Research Assistants

For ILL Requests Where...

You Will Use the Book Exclusively Your Faculty Will Use the Book Exclusively

First Time ILLiad User:

  1. Create your own account with a username & password.
  2. Register with (a) your name, (b) your University ID / UID, (c) your Georgetown .edu email & (d) telephone information. Your UID is a nine-digit number that starts with "8" found on a mobile ID under (i)nformation icon.
  3. Register as "Student" status.

Registered User:

  1. Submit requests under your account.
  2. For forgotten username, contact the ILL Office, law-ill@georgetown.edu.
  3. For forgotten password, on ILLiad, click on Forgot Password? link & check your email, or contact the ILL Office, law-ill@georgetown.edu.
  • Ask your faculty to email the citation to the Law Library's Research Services department, at lawlibraryresearch@georgetown.edu.
  • Library Research Services will then take the steps to submit an ILLiad request.
  • Neither Interlibrary Loan nor Library Research Services accepts emailed citations or requests from law students.
  • Interlibrary Loan will not accept ILLiad requests that you submit under the faculty's name.

For a local academic library's copy of a book that the faculty would like to check out, please ask your faculty to email the citation to Law Library's Research Services department, at lawlibraryresearch@georgetown.edu.

In the ILLiad request form, within the Purpose of Material field, type "RA for [faculty name]." Providing us with the purpose of the request will guide us on how far to pursue non-ILL options.  
You will be the point of contact and shall receive emailed questions, arrival notices, reminders and overdue messages. Faculty will be the point of contact for arrival notices, reminders and overdue messages.
ILL books that arrive will be held under your name at the Circulation Desk. ILL books that arrive will be delivered to the faculty's office or campus mail folder by Library Research Services.
You are responsible for returning borrowed ILLs. They can be returned to Circulation Desk or into the Library Book Drop Boxes when the Circulation Desk is closed. Faculty is responsible for returning borrowed ILLs and should contact Library Research Services to arrange a campus retrieval.
Borrowed ILL materials should be held in your possession. You are financially responsible for the borrowed property. Do not lend to your faculty books that are checked out to you. ILL books cannot be transferred from one ILLiad account to another. Borrowed ILL materials should be kept by the faculty and not shared with you. Do not accept a copy of an ILL book checked out to the faculty. ILL books cannot be transferred from one ILLiad account to another.
If you and the professor both need to use the same title, submit an ILL request through your own ILLiad account and ask your faculty to email the citation to Library Research Services, at lawlibraryresearch@georgetown.edu. Follow this method even if you and the faculty need the book at different times. For Copies....

You are free to submit requests for articles or scans of pages  under your own ILLiad account even if you will be forwarding the file to the faculty.

Options in Submitting Book Requests

  • Through the Law Library catalog record Request book, chapter, or article through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) link.
    • If there is an available copy at a local academic (non-law) library, your ILL request will be returned to you to first try borrowing the local copy.
  • Through WorldCat record for the item, "Click here to request via ILL" link. Play the tutorial: Borrowing from Non-Georgetown Institutions, or
  • Signing into your registered ILLiad and filling out a blank Loan Request form.
ILLiad Form Field What to Enter
Publication Title (required) If manually entering the form, enter or copy and paste the title as cited. Do not abbreviate title, not guess the full title if abbreviated.
Author(s) or Editor(s) (required field) If there is neither, then enter "N/A"
Year of Publication Optional, but enter if you need a certain version. If nothing is entered, the more widely held printing / version will be borrowed for you.
Edition Optional, but enter if you need a certain version. If nothing is entered, the more widely held edition will be borrowed for you.
Purpose of Material (required field)
  • Enter "RA for [faculty name]." Providing us with the purpose of the request will guide us on how far to pursue non-ILL options. You will still be held liable for the borrowed material.
  • Enter other helpful information such as "Need vol. 2"

Requesting a Copy of a Journal or Newspaper Article

Sign in with your registered ILLiad account and fill out a blank PDF Request form with the following information: 

ILLiad Form Field What to Enter
Publication Title (required field) Enter or copy title as cited. Do not abbreviate the title yourself nor guess the full title if found abbreviated.
Article Title Enter or copy article title as it appears in your found citation, do not abbreviate. Enter any worded pagination information or copying instructions, e.g., "title page."
Volume
  • In Bluebook citation style, this is the number typically preceding the title of a consecutively paginated journal.
  • In other citation style, the volume may be found following the journal title and preceding a parenthetical issue number and pagination, e.g. 6 (2): 124-132.
Month and Date Important information when requesting a newspaper article as the Bluebook citation style would not include volume nor issue number of the newspaper. Newspaper requests without the month and date will be returned to you for clarification.
Year and/or Edition Enter the publication year for the journal or newspaper article. (There would be no "edition" for a journal or newspaper.)
Exact Pages (Numbers, punctuations & symbols only) (30 character limit)
  • If you only have the starting page but need the entire article, then enter as "124 - ." Otherwise, if you enter "124," then just that one page will be supplied to you.
  • Please enter only numbers, punctuations (e.g., - ) and symbols (e.g., §).
  • There is a 30 character limit to this field.
  • Any worded information entered in this field will be ignored.

Requesting Copy of Pages Out of a Book or a Large Work

Sign in with your registered ILLiad account and fill out a blank PDF Request form with the following information:

Title of Publication (required field) Enter title as cited. Do not abbreviate the title yourself nor guess the full title if found abbreviated.
Article Title, Chapter Title, Sect. No., Worded Pagination Info. or Copying Instr.

Enter chapter or section title if available. Also, any worded pagination or copying information, e.g., "title pg."

  • Example for book chapter: "Title pg, copyright pg, pp.32-45" or "Title pg, copyright pg, Chap. 6"
  • Example for encyclopedia/dictionary: "Title pg, copyright pg, entry for Search & Seizure"
  • Example for legal reporter: "Title pg, copyright pg, § 32.15"
  • Example for statute: "§§ 40-23-191 through 40-23-199 (1975), eff. Oct. 1, 2015"
  • Example for statute-at-large: "2014 N.C. Sess. Laws 767"
Year and/or Edition
  • Enter publication year and/or edition, e.g., 2023 3rd ed.
  • If nothing is entered, then pages from the most widely held version will be supplied to you.
